If you’re new to boating, you may find yourself asking, “What do all those red channel markers and green buoys mean?”
As the term implies, winterizing a boat is the procedure completed for preparing a boat for long-term storage. For example, if you live in a climate where the lake is annually certain to be covered by ice, prepping the boat for the freezing off-season is almost mandatory. If left to freeze, water trapped in an engine block, water tank or other on-board plumbing can cause significant and very expensive damage.
With the days getting shorter and the air getting cooler, you may be planning to wrap up your boating activities until next spring. But, don’t haul your boat just yet. Now is the best time to repair or replace a variety of gear. In fact, since their condition is fresh in your mind, you may already have a mental list going. That same reason is why you should act now.
Boat fenders, often referred to as “boat bumpers” by new or novice boaters, provide a cushion between your boat and a dock, jetty or another boat. They’re used by all types of boats from motor yachts and sailboats to small runabouts to prevent damage to paint, varnish, gunwales and hulls overall. A must-have boating accessory, fenders can help protect your boat (and your wallet) in case of a docking mishap or unexpected motion due to wind or current.
Whether you’re cruising to a waterfront stadium on game day or cruising to a raft-up of boaters all cheering for the same team with the game on TV, you’re going to want to do some boatgating. Boatgating is the combination of two great American pastimes: boating and tailgating.
In-person boat shows are back just in time for the season kick off this September and a popular one on the books is the 2021 Progressive Norwalk Boat Show at Norwalk Cove Marina in Connecticut.
Whoever decided that Labor Day weekend should mark the unofficial end of summer—and an end to boating season for some areas of the country—clearly didn’t count on September being perfect in so many ways. Sure, the kids are back in school, and traditional family vacations are on hold until the holiday season; but, you can still take advantage of brilliant boating weekends through September (and who knows, weather-willing, even into October).
